Bisphenol A (BPA) is a colourless solid that is soluble in organic solvents, but poorly soluble in water and has been in commercial use since 1957. BPA, being clear and tough, is often used to make plastic bottles for drinks, however, BPA exhibits hormone-like properties that raise concerns about its suitability in such food containers. Since 2008, several governments have investigated its safety, which prompted some retailers to withdraw polycarbonate products. Although certain governments believe the current levels of BPA in food products are low enough not to cause concern, there is still widespread opinion that such chemicals may cause harm on a long term basis.
